When we talk about adding years to your life and life to your years, we tend to focus on four components:
- Cardiovascular Exercise
- Balance Exercises
- Strength Training
- Flexibility
One other area of fitness that you should be addressing is Brain fitness. Too many people think there's nothing they can do about their brain, and it's going to deteriorate at a predetermined rate when they get old enough.
While the brain isn't a muscle, it still responds very similarly to a muscle in that when you use it more, it works better, and when you don't use it, it deteriorates.
As we continue to make advances in medicine, and people get more involved in health and fitness, we need to make sure the brain will still be healthy into old age as well.
Here are some things you can do to exercise your brain:
Learn new things. Think of a topic that interest you but you don't know much about. Go to the library or search the internet for information on that topic. Learn a little about it every day. Try to become an expert. Then tell others what you've learned. Teach them what you know. Now move on to another topic.
Stay involved in current events and politics. Watch TV and read the newspapers and magazines. Think critically about the topics and discuss them with others.
Interact socially with others on a regular basis. Church, bingo nights, senior travel clubs, health clubs, and card game groups are all great places to be around others and exercise your brain.
Play stimulating games like crossword puzzles, Soduku, and card games.
Watch educational TV on Discovery, TLC, and the History channel, or enjoy a crime show like CSI or Law and Order that will keep your brain guessing about the outcome.
The key to all of this is to do it regularly. Know that the exercise you give your brain now will benefit you for the rest of your life.
